The Building
An early home moved to this location after the big fire of 1923.
In the 70’s it was a bar called the “Green Frog.” Those previous owners went on to open the Green Parrot which is located on Highway 95.
It was sold to Norman Greenwood 1979 who used it as his private residence. He placed an old liquor still on the roof and reopened it as a bar in 1987, calling it “Still Norm’s Place”.
Utah-based demolition expert Ruth Andersen purchased and meticulously restored several historic structures in Goldfield, NV. Most notably, she renovated the former Northern Saloon (now the Occidental), originally built by famous boxing promoter Tex Rickard—and transformed the crumbling 1906 brick property into a quality restaurant and gathering place which reopened in 2007.
Andersen, who invested millions into preserving Goldfield's history, is also known for refurbishing a Fifth Street home once believed to have been inhabited by lawman Virgil Earp. The Northern Saloon, located in the Esmeralda County seat, serves as a prominent physical reminder of the town's lucrative gold boom days.
The building was purchased by Jim Marsh in 2021 and renamed The Occidental. Jim Marsh is a legendary Las Vegas auto dealer and rural Nevada gaming entrepreneur. Operating in the state since 1971, he owns multiple auto dealerships (including Jim Marsh Chrysler Jeep and Jim Marsh Kia) and several rural casinos like the Santa Fe Saloon (Goldfield), The Occidental (Goldfield), The Bug Bar (Tonopah), Tonopah Station (Tonopah), Longstreet Casino and Hotel (Armargosa Valley), and the Banc Club (Tonopah).
Gaming was added and the bar was reopened in August of 2025.
In May of 2026, Jim Marsh leased the dining room/kitchen to Timothy Hipp. “The Dining Room at the Occidental” opened on July 9th, 2026. Tim has lived in Goldfield for 11 years, working as a handyman, County Commissioner, and mining Hoist Man. Prior to that he worked as a military contractor for over 10 years in Iraq, Djibouti, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. He started as a contractor after completing his four years of military service in the US Army and was stationed in Fort Jackson (South Carolina), Fort Hood (Texas), Heidelberg (Germany), and completed a deployment to Kosovo.
